Autumn Term 2025

Class Teacher: Miss Barrow
Teaching Assistant: Miss Powell, (Mr Martin) (Miss Crew-Gee)

Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 1! We have an exciting term ahead, filled with new learning opportunities, creativity, and adventure.

Year 1 Autumn Term Overview

📚 English
This term, our writing will be inspired by a range of adventurous stories, including Cave Baby and Astro Girl, alongside many other tales that spark imagination. These books will help us develop storytelling skills, descriptive language, and a love for reading.

👧 History – Childhood in the 1950s
Our history topic is Childhood in the 1950s. We will explore what life was like for children during this time and compare it to our lives today. Children will discover popular toys and games, learn about significant events such as the Queen’s coronation, and find out what it was like to grow up in Rugby in the 1950s.

🌍 Geography – Our Wonderful World
As geography is a brand-new subject in Year 1, we will be developing our geography skills by exploring Our Wonderful World. Children will begin to understand maps, locations, and the diverse features of our planet.

🎨 Art – Funny Faces and Fabulous Features
In art, we will be looking closely at Funny Faces and Fabulous Features. We’ve already studied our friends’ faces and noticed incredible details we had never seen before! This will help us as we develop our drawing and observational skills.

🔨 Design & Technology – Shade and Shelter
In DT, our focus is Shade and Shelter. Children will learn how to design and construct their own dens, making sure they are strong enough to survive the wind and rain.

✝️ Religious Education
In RE, we will be asking the question: What do Christians think about God? and exploring different ideas and beliefs.

🏃 PE
In PE, we are enhancing our ball skills and fundamental movement skills, developing coordination, balance, and teamwork.

💻 Computing
In computing, we will be learning the importance of keeping ourselves safe online and using technology responsibly.

🎵 Music
In music, we will use our voices expressively and creatively through singing songs and speaking rhymes, building rhythm and confidence.

PSHE - Children will learn from the Being Me in my World unit from Jigsaw PSHE to explore their identity, feelings, and place in the school community. They learn about rights, responsibilities, and teamwork, while developing self-confidence and empathy. Activities encourage reflection, goal-setting, and understanding how individual actions contribute to collective well-being.

📖 Phonics & Reading
From Monday to Wednesday, children will take part in reading groups to practise their phonics, strengthening their reading skills and building fluency. Later in the week, they will take their books home to enjoy with an adult, while we continue to develop phonics skills together in class.

🗣️ Languages
We will also be starting French this term, beginning with simple words and phrases to build our confidence in speaking another language.
